It is increasingly evident that healthy, sustainable eco-systems are essential for human well being, with the negative effects of environmental degradation – such as floods, droughts, food insecurity and displacement – disproportionately affecting the world’s poorest.
One way in which JOA is working to is working toward sustainable eco-systems is through its Conservation Livelihoods Programme, which is centred on the premise that vicious circles of poverty and degradation can be replaced by virtuous ones of restoration and well being. Another way in which JOA is contributing toward the protection and restoration of the environment is through its commitment to carbon neutrality, ensuring that JOA’s carbon emissions – from heating, to paper to travel – are offset each year.
In light of JOA’s commitment to carbon neutrality, we are delighted to announce that JOA has partnered with Durrell Conservation Trust’s own Rewild Carbon initiative to offset 8.55 tonnes of carbon through a project to rewild the Atlantic Rainforest in Brazil.
Going beyond simply sequestering carbon, this unique new initiative ensures that the conservation of biodiversity – and strengthening the support of local communities for conservation initiatives – is at the heart of carbon offsetting.
The project to rewild the Atlantic Rainforest in Brazil is working to restore forest corridors with native trees and local fauna, promoting connectivity between fragmented forest areas, enhancing biodiversity and contributing to the conservation of a range of vulnerable species including jaguars, black lion tamarins, ocelots and tapirs.
In addition, the project will work with the local community to support sustainable farming practices and provide employment opportunities through forest restoration, community nurseries and agroforestry projects.
