Tanzania – July 2018

JOA Community Work Project Volunteers worked alongside Raleigh International to improve access to safe sanitation and hygiene for primary school children in the Morogoro region of Tanzania. This was achieved by:-

  • The construction of new school sanitation blocks for children and teachers in primary schools. The blocks include  hand washing facilities and will be fully accessible for young people with disabilities. Girls will be provided with new private washrooms allowing them privacy and dignity. Pupil and teacher blocks will be separate.
  • The setting up of SWASH clubs in schools, consisting of children and teachers, who will develop and deliver campaigns to raise awareness of safe hygiene behaviours. The SWASH clubs will also support volunteers to install murals around each new sanitation block to promote safe hygiene practices to keep children safe from illnesses.
  • Capacity building of School Management Committees to give them the skills and knowledge to maintain their school sanitation facilities.
