Nepal – November 2017
The CWP team assisted The Gurkha Welfare Scheme, participating in the construction of the Balkumari Aama Samuha Community Centre in Sano Kavre, Ilampokhari.
The Balkumari Mothers’ Group was established in 2005 under the leadership of Mrs Nau Maya Gurung, and used by the 88 families who live in the area. During the earthquakes in 2015, the original community hall was badly damaged and the local community could not afford to rebuild it. The Mothers’ Group made a compelling case for rebuilding the centre, and it became clear that this was a strong community, held together by a proactive and dedicated group of women, therefore the Gurkha Welfare Scheme and Jersey Overseas Aid agreed to undertake the rebuilding project. Land for the new community hall was secured and cleared by the local villagers in preparation for a new building to be constructed. the local villagers also contributed to the rebuilding project, providing labour for the new construction.
The finished new community centre, provides a place for medical outreach facilities, village events, and a resource in times of emergency, and has a very real and lasting impact through the benefit provides to the whole community.
