Mongolia – June 2010

Fraternite de Notre Dame has been established in Mongolia since 2002, when it opened an orphanage for 26 abandoned babies in its own fenced compound. Believing all children have a right to an education the Fraternite decided to set up its own school which is also attended by local street children.

The children have moved through the grading system over the years so there is now a need to provide a larger building and it is this that the 2010 team will be helping with. Alongside the new school the Fraternite also hope to provide a soup kitchen and a medical consultation area to cater for the needs of street children, all the facilities will be within the compound.

There is only a 4 month period when building is possible due to extreme weather patterns in the region around Ulaan Baatar therefore the project started in late April and finished in late August. The JOA 2010 team assisted local builders in June/July. By the time of the team’s arrival the foundations had been laid so the team helped with the walls that are made of heavy concrete blocks.
