As a part of Jersey’s response to emergency requests for aid, since 2018 JOA has been contributing to The Start Fund, a non-specific Pooled Fund launched in April 2014 as a new, innovative response to humanitarian crises.
The Start Fund is managed itself by the Start Network, a network of aid agencies from across five continents, ranging from large international organisations to national NGOs.
Traditional emergency appeals involve NGOs waiting for an emergency to occur before launching an appeal. In contrast, the Start Fund appeals for contributions year-round, meaning that funding is already secured prior to an emergency taking place. As a result, the Start Network can co-ordinate and deliver efficient emergency aid, harnessing the power and knowledge of the network to help people affected by crises.
